Wistar Institute
Founded in 1892, The Wistar Institute (Philadelphia, PA) is an independent nonprofit biomedical research institution and has been designated a National Cancer Institute Cancer Center in basic research. Wistar operates concentrating on major diseases such as cancer, immune-system disorders, heart ailments, and infectious diseases. Wistar discoveries have led to the development of vaccines for such diseases as rabies and rubella, the identification of genes associated with breast, lung, and prostate cancer, and the development of monoclonal antibodies and other significant research technologies and tools. The institute operates from about 30 laboratories with research programs targeting genetic, molecular, and cellular discoveries. The company's research has been used in the development of vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology drugs. Wistar collaborates with educational and governmental partners and is the originator of TALL-104 technology.
